Gold trades on global commodity markets at a price per troy ounce called the spot price, which fluctuates throughout the day. Your offer is calculated from that live price. No dealer pays 100 percent of spot because refining, testing, and overhead are real costs — a refiner charges a fee to melt and process scrap gold, and that cost is built into any legitimate offer. We show you the spot price, the weight, the karat, and our percentage so you can see exactly how the number was reached.
Gold coins and bars
We buy gold bullion coins — American Eagles, Canadian Maples, South African Krugerrands, Austrian Philharmonics — and gold bars from PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, Valcambi, and other recognized mints. Bullion is priced closer to spot than jewelry because it is already pure, recognizable, and needs no refining. Connecticut law exempts bullion coins and bars from the 10-day hold that applies to jewelry and other non-bullion items, so there is no resale delay on those pieces. Your payment is still the same day.
Dental gold
Old crowns, bridges, inlays, and partial dentures often contain gold — usually 16K to 22K. Dental gold is not stamped, so we test it on the spot. Bring whatever you have, including pieces still attached to tooth structure; we sort and weigh the metal content.
Gold watches
Solid gold watch cases and bands are priced by weight and karat like jewelry. Gold-filled and gold-plated watch cases contain only a thin layer of gold over base metal — we test them honestly and explain the difference. A solid 14K watch case can be worth several hundred dollars in gold alone, while a gold-plated case may have no meaningful gold value.
Gold-filled and gold-plated items
Gold-filled jewelry has a layer of gold bonded to a base metal, usually 5 percent gold by weight. Gold-plated jewelry has an even thinner coating — a few atoms thick. Neither contains enough gold to price by weight like solid karat jewelry. We can still look at these pieces, and in some cases gold-filled items have a small recoverable value, but we will not pretend a plated chain is worth gold melt. We test everything in front of you so you know exactly what you have.
Platinum and silver alongside gold
If you are bringing gold, bring any platinum and silver too. Platinum jewelry (marked PLAT, PT950, or similar) trades at its own spot price. Sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and jewelry is priced from the silver spot price. Many Bridgeport estates contain a mix, and we evaluate each metal on its own.
Payment by check, same day
Connecticut law requires licensed precious metals dealers to pay by check. You receive your check the same day you accept the offer — there is no waiting period for your payment. The 10-day hold applies to when we can resell non-bullion items, not to when you get paid. Bullion coins and bars are exempt from the hold entirely.
