Selling Gold from Wallingford

Wallingford has gold buyers along Route 5 and Center Street, and we are not going to pretend they do not exist. The drive to our shop at 2285 Whitney Avenue in Hamden is about 15 minutes via Route 5 south or Route 15 — no highway needed. What separates us from a Center Street storefront is the process: we lay each piece on the counter, acid-test and electronically test the karat, and pull up the live spot price before naming a figure.

Wallingford was a silver manufacturing town — Wallace Silversmiths and Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. operated here for generations — and that heritage means sterling flatware sets turn up in local estates constantly. We price sterling from the live silver spot, piece by piece, and we know the difference between sterling and silverplate because Wallace made both. A complete Wallace Grand Baroque set in its chest is worth what the silver weighs at spot — no discount for being a set.

The evaluation costs nothing, the written quote goes home with you, and nobody pushes you to decide that day. Compare our number with any quote from a Route 5 or Center Street buyer — if theirs is higher, go there.

How Gold and Silver Is Priced and What We Buy

Karat stamps and fineness marks

Gold purity is stamped as a karat mark: 10K is 41.7 percent gold, 14K is 58.5 percent, 18K is 75 percent, 22K is 91.6 percent, and 24K is pure. European fineness stamps — 417, 585, 750, and 999 — match those same purities written as parts per thousand, and they turn up often on Italian, Lebanese, and other imported gold. Wallingford’s large Italian-American community brings in 18K chains and religious medals regularly, often stamped 750. We acid-test and electronically test every piece because stamps are occasionally wrong, and verifying the true karat before pricing is what separates a fair offer from a guess.

Spot price and why no dealer pays 100 percent

Gold's spot price is the live per-ounce trading value on world commodity exchanges, and it shifts minute to minute as markets move. Your offer is calculated from that live price. No buyer hands over 100 percent of spot — there are real costs for refining, testing, and running a business, and refiners take their cut to melt down scrap. We show you the spot price, the weight, the karat, and our percentage so the math is fully transparent. If another buyer offers more, you are free to go there.

Gold coins and bars and the bullion exemption

We buy gold bullion coins — American Eagles, Canadian Maples, Krugerrands, Austrian Philharmonics — and gold bars from PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, Valcambi, and other recognized mints. Bullion is priced closer to spot than jewelry because it is already pure, recognizable, and needs no refining. Connecticut exempts bullion coins and bars from the 10-day hold that applies to jewelry and other non-bullion items, so there is no resale delay. Your payment is still the same day.

Dental gold

Dental work — crowns, bridges, inlays, partial dentures — frequently holds gold in the 16K to 22K range. Dental gold is never stamped, so we test it on the counter while you watch. Bring any dental gold you have, even pieces still stuck to tooth material — we pull the precious metal away from the non-gold parts and weigh it right there on the counter before giving you a number.

Gold watches

Solid gold watch cases are priced by weight and karat like jewelry. But a lot of watch cases are gold-filled or rolled-gold-plate instead of solid — turn the case over and check for marks like “GF,” “RGP,” “1/20 12K,” or “Warranted.” Those indicate a thin gold layer over base metal. Every watch case gets tested on the counter so you can see for yourself whether it is solid or filled, and we do not put a melt number on gold-filled cases because the recoverable gold is too small to justify one.

Gold-filled and gold-plated

Gold-filled jewelry has a layer of gold bonded to base metal about 5 percent gold by weight. Gold-plated jewelry has an even thinner coating and is worth minimal scrap value at best. Each piece is tested and weighed where you can watch — if an item turns out to be gold-filled, we tell you straight up and explain why the scrap return is so small. Some gold-filled pieces have small recoverable value; gold-plated items typically do not.

Platinum and silver alongside gold

When you bring gold, bring any platinum and sterling silver along as well. Platinum jewelry (marked PLAT, PT950, or similar) trades at its own spot price. Sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and tea sets are priced from the silver spot price. Wallingford estates often contain a mix of metals — gold jewelry alongside a complete Wallace sterling service — and we assess each on its own.

Sterling flatware, hollowware and tea sets

Wallingford was a silver manufacturing center — Wallace Silversmiths and Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. operated here for generations — and complete sterling flatware services come in from local estates regularly. Sterling is marked “Sterling” or “925” on the back of each piece; silverplate is marked “Plate,” “Silverplate,” or “EPNS,” and has minimal scrap value. We check every piece individually because Wallace made both sterling and plate lines that look identical from the front. Weighted candlesticks and candelabra have plaster or wax cores inside the base — the actual silver is only the outer shell, often 20 to 30 percent of total weight. We separate the silver from the weighted core and weigh only the precious metal. A full sterling set in its original chest is worth exactly what the silver weighs at the live spot price — no discount for being a set versus loose pieces.

Paid by check, same day

Connecticut requires licensed precious metals dealers to pay by check. You receive your check the same day you accept the offer — no waiting period for your payment. The 10-day hold applies to when we can resell non-bullion items, not to when you get paid. Bullion coins and bars are exempt from the hold.

Gold and Silver in Wallingford’s Neighborhoods

Wallingford’s silver manufacturing heritage shapes what comes across our counter. Wallace Silversmiths and Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. employed generations of local families, and those families held onto sterling — complete flatware services, tea sets, and hollowware in their original chests. The older neighborhoods near the town center and along the Route 5 corridor through Yalesville still turn up estate collections that pair gold jewelry with full Wallace sterling sets. We test each gold piece for karat and weigh each sterling piece from the live silver spot.

Wallingford’s large Italian-American community brings in 18K chains, bracelets, and religious medals regularly — often stamped 750 — and we test each piece to confirm the karat before pricing. Families connected to Choate Rosemary Hall also bring in estate gold and sterling from longer-tenured households in the town’s residential sections.

Wallingford is bordered by Meriden to the west, Cheshire to the southwest, Hamden to the south, North Haven to the west, Durham and Middlefield to the east, and North Branford to the southeast. Anyone coming from those surrounding towns can get to our Whitney Avenue counter in 15 to 20 minutes. Whether you are coming from the Center Street area or Yalesville, the evaluation is free whether you sell or not.
