Selling Gold from North Haven
North Haven has gold buyers along Washington Avenue, and we are not going to pretend they do not exist. The question is whether the shop you walk into tests each piece individually, confirms the karat on the counter, and shows you the live spot price before naming a number. Many do not, and the result is a single bulk quote that treats your 18K chain the same as a 10K ring — underpaying the higher-karat piece by a quarter of its value.
A buyer who weighs everything together and quotes one number is not testing your pieces — they are averaging, and that average always favors the lower-karat items. We separate every piece, test each karat on the counter, and show you the math for each one individually. North Haven’s older neighborhoods — Montowese, the stretches along Whitney Avenue and Ridge Road — are where we see the most estate gold: class rings, 18K Italian chains from the Italian-American community, religious medals stamped 750. Each piece gets its own evaluation, its own karat test, and its own line on the offer sheet.
The drive from North Haven to 2285 Whitney Avenue in Hamden is about 10 minutes via Skiff Street or Route 22 west to Whitney, then south. On-site parking, walk-ins welcome.
We acid-test and electronically test every piece in front of you, display the live gold spot price, walk you through the weight and purity, and hand you a written offer. Compare it with any quote from Washington Avenue — if theirs is higher, go there.
How Gold Is Priced and What We Buy
Karat stamps and fineness marks
Gold purity is stamped as a karat mark: 10K is 41.7 percent gold, 14K is 58.5 percent, 18K is 75 percent, 22K is 91.6 percent, and 24K is pure. European fineness stamps — 417, 585, 750, 916, and 999 — correspond to the same purities and appear on Italian, Lebanese, and other imported pieces. North Haven’s Italian-American households regularly bring in 18K chains and religious medals stamped 750, and we test every piece because stamps are occasionally wrong. Confirming the actual karat is the foundation of a fair offer, and a buyer who lumps your 18K in with 14K is paying you roughly 25 percent less than the metal warrants.
Spot price and why no dealer pays 100 percent
Gold trades on global commodity markets at a per-ounce spot price that fluctuates throughout the day. Your offer is calculated from that live price. No dealer pays 100 percent of spot — refining, testing, and overhead are real costs, and a refiner charges a fee to melt and process scrap gold. We show you the spot price, the weight, the karat, and our percentage so you can see how the number was reached. If another buyer offers more, you are free to go there.
Gold coins and bars and the bullion exemption
We buy gold bullion coins — American Eagles, Canadian Maples, Krugerrands, Austrian Philharmonics — and gold bars from PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, Valcambi, and other recognized mints. Bullion trades near spot because it is already pure, recognizable, and requires no refining. Connecticut exempts bullion coins and bars from the 10-day resale hold that applies to jewelry and other non-bullion items, so there is no resale delay. Your payment is still the same day.
Dental gold
Old crowns, bridges, inlays, and partial dentures often contain gold — typically 16K to 22K. Dental gold is not stamped, so we test it on the counter while you watch. Bring whatever you have, including pieces still attached to tooth structure; we sort and weigh the metal content and price it from the live spot.
Gold watches
Solid gold watch cases are priced by weight and karat like jewelry. But plenty of watch cases are gold-filled or rolled-gold-plate rather than solid — check the case back for stamps like “GF,” “RGP,” “1/20 12K,” or “Warranted.” Those markings signal a thin gold veneer over base metal, not solid gold content. We electronically test each case on the counter so you know exactly what you have, and we never quote gold-melt pricing for gold-filled cases since the recoverable gold is negligible.
Gold-filled and gold-plated
Gold-filled jewelry has a thicker gold layer than gold-plated but still contains only a fraction of a gram of actual gold. Gold-plated pieces have an even thinner coating and are worth minimal scrap value. We test and weigh everything honestly — if a piece is gold-filled, we tell you, and we explain why the scrap value is low. We do not pretend plated jewelry is solid gold to make our offer look bigger.
Platinum and silver alongside gold
When you bring gold, bring any platinum and sterling silver along as well. Platinum jewelry (marked PLAT, PT950, or similar) trades at its own spot price. Sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and jewelry is priced from the silver spot price. North Haven estates often contain a mix of metals — gold jewelry alongside a tea set or silverware — and we assess each on its own.
Paid by check, same day
Connecticut requires licensed precious metals dealers to pay by check. You receive your check the same day you accept the offer — no waiting period for your payment. The 10-day hold applies to when we can resell non-bullion items, not to when you get paid. Bullion coins and bars are exempt from the hold.
Gold and Metals We Buy from North Haven Residents
Every karat, every form — if it is gold, platinum, or sterling silver, we want to see it.
10K, 14K, 18K, 22K & 24K Gold
All karats purchased at live spot rates. We test every piece — including 18K Italian chains from North Haven’s Italian-American community — so the karat is confirmed, not assumed.
Gold Watches & Pocket Watches
Solid gold watch cases priced by weight and karat. We test each case — solid gold, gold-filled, or plated — and tell you honestly which it is.
Gold Coins & Bullion
American Eagles, Canadian Maples, Krugerrands, Philharmonics, and pre-1933 U.S. gold coins. Bullion coins and bars are exempt from the Connecticut 10-day resale hold.
Gold Bars
PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, Valcambi, and other recognized mint bars in 1 gram, 10 gram, 1 oz, and larger sizes. Sealed or loose — all welcome.
Dental Gold
Old crowns, bridges, inlays, and partial dentures — typically 16K to 22K. Not stamped, so we test on the counter while you watch. Bring whatever you have, including pieces still attached to tooth structure.
Broken & Scrap Gold
Bent, broken, or incomplete pieces, gold filings, bench scrap — all of it has full melt value by weight. The condition of a gold piece does not change how much gold is in it.
Platinum
Platinum jewelry and bands marked PLAT, PT950, or similar. Priced from the live platinum spot price, tested and weighed in front of you.
Sterling Silver
Sterling flatware, hollowware, tea sets, and jewelry marked STER, 925, or .925. Priced from the live silver spot — many North Haven estates have silver alongside gold.
