Why West Haven Residents Drive Up Whitney Avenue
West Haven is a city of about 55,000 on the coast directly west of New Haven, with pawn shops and gold buyers along Campbell Avenue and Sawmill Road. Residents have places to sell coins locally. What brings West Haven families 15 minutes up Whitney Avenue to our shop in Hamden is the difference between a counter offer and a real evaluation. We are a licensed Connecticut precious metals dealer who only buys — no retail showroom, no inventory to protect, no incentive to quote low on a coin we plan to resell. The number we give you is the number we stand behind.
When you arrive, we lay out your coins on the counter and go through them one at a time. For bullion, we pull live spot pricing, weigh each piece, and walk you through the arithmetic. For numismatic coins, we identify the date, mint mark, and condition, then reference the same pricing guides we use when we eventually resell. You watch every step. You take home a written offer, with no obligation to decide immediately.
Connecticut law requires payment by check, and you receive your check the same day you accept our offer. The evaluation is always free, whether you sell or not.
What We Buy from West Haven Residents
From single coins to full estate collections, we assess every piece on its own merits. West Haven families regularly bring inherited collections to our counter, and we give each coin the same careful attention whether it is a common-date cent or a rare gold piece.
Bullion Coins
Every coin sits at the intersection of metal content, rarity, and condition. Bullion pieces — American Eagles, Maple Leafs, Krugerrands — carry a small premium above spot, and we test and weigh each one in front of you. Numismatic coins require a closer look. A common-date Morgan Dollar from the 1880s in circulated condition may be worth nothing more than its silver, but an 1893-S Morgan in uncirculated condition can be worth thousands. We identify the date, mint mark, and grade, then check the same pricing references we use when we eventually resell — and you see every step. West Haven's coastal neighborhoods near Savin Rock and Campbell Avenue produce mid-century collections from working families who saved silver dollars and wheat cents, while the University of New Haven area brings newer holdings from faculty and staff.
Do Not Clean Your Coins
Do not clean your coins before bringing them in. Any polishing or dipping strips the original toning collectors value, and a cleaned coin is worth less than an untouched one at the same grade — sometimes much less. This happens regularly with estates: a relative cleaned a pile of silver dollars hoping to improve their appearance. Leave them as they are. We evaluate coins in their original state.
Complete Collections and Estates
If you have a complete collection — a binder of Lincoln cents, a set of proof sets, a cigar box of silver dollars, or a full estate — bring the whole thing. We evaluate every coin individually, not as a single bulk lot. A 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent in fine condition is valued for its scarcity, never mixed in with common cents. Many shops will give you a single bulk figure for a whole collection; we never do that. Coins are graded and priced one by one on the counter, making the value of each piece fully visible.
The 10-Day Hold
Connecticut law requires a 10-day hold on certain non-bullion items before we can resell them. This is a consumer protection — it gives sellers a window to reclaim items if they change their mind. The hold applies to when we can resell, not to when you get paid. Bullion coins and bars are exempt from the hold. You receive your check the same day you accept our offer, regardless of the hold period.
